Hey dudes. I get a crack out of you guys going around taking photos of vanity plates. As it turns out, one of those VE3 plates you captured happens to be mine and in case you didn't know, all VE3 and VA3 plates are Ham Radio plates. You know,,, those old farts who used to play with radios before internet came to the world. Some still do, believe it or not.
So VE#XXX is a radio call sign, adhering to international communication rules set by the ITU (International Telecomunication Union). e.g. you may know that K or W are identifying letter for radio stations and aircrafts in the US. In canada C, XM, VE, VA etc. are signifying this country. The Number 3 is for Ontario (e.g 1 is for maritime provinces, 2 is for Quebec, 4 for Alberta, 7 for B.C. etc.). The remaining 2 or 3 letters you see on the plates are personal.
Anyway, even before vanity plates were first offered in Ontario in 1988, these were issues as standard issue plates to those who were holding a Ham license. This was being that the Transportation and Communication were under one common Government Ministry. Being standard issue, they didn't cost anything originally, but in later years they were charging $25 for them. I am not sure how they are issued now or what they cost.
So,,, if you thought you are "onto something", it is really not much of a mystery.
Enjoy.
By the way, my other plate is JUSTABOX, attached to my Porsche Boxster. Most people who see me in it get a kick out of that one and I get many smiley comments. All good. So let's see if you snap that one anytime soon.
Take care guys.
